Swap XRP means exchanging XRP for another asset — most often a stablecoin like USDT or a token on a different chain. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a standalone blockchain that is not EVM-compatible, so a swap runs either on a centralized exchange or through a non-custodial cross-chain swap service — not on an Ethereum-style same-chain DEX. This is an independent reference; live quotes and settlement happen in the external app.

What is swapping XRP?

Swapping XRP is exchanging XRP for a different asset — a stablecoin like USDT, or a token that lives on another chain. Because XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger and not an ERC-20 token, the swap does not happen on a same-chain Ethereum DEX.

Instead you use a centralized exchange or a cross-chain swap service that accepts XRP on the XRPL side and delivers the output asset on its own network. This is an independent dashboard; routing, quotes and settlement happen in the external app.

How swapping XRP works

Choose the asset you want to receive and the network it should arrive on. A cross-chain swap service quotes an output amount, gives you an XRPL deposit address (sometimes with a destination tag), and you send XRP from your XRPL wallet or exchange.

Once the XRP payment settles on the ledger — usually within seconds — the service releases the output asset to the destination address you provided. On a centralized exchange the same idea applies: deposit XRP, trade for the target asset, then withdraw to your own wallet.

XRP Ledger & non-EVM

The XRP Ledger is a standalone blockchain with its own consensus and transaction model. It is not EVM-compatible, so XRP is not an ERC-20 token and Ethereum wallets like MetaMask do not hold XRP directly.

Moving value between XRP and an EVM chain such as Ethereum therefore needs a cross-chain route — a bridge or a swap service — rather than a single same-chain DEX trade. Confirm which network the asset on the other side lives on before you swap.

Routes & where to swap

Two common paths exist for swapping XRP:

  • Centralized exchange: deposit XRP, trade it for the target asset on an order book, and withdraw to your wallet. Custodial while funds sit on the exchange.
  • Cross-chain swap service: a non-custodial service accepts XRP and sends the output asset to an address you control, without holding an account for you.

The XRPL also has a built-in decentralized exchange for assets issued on the ledger itself, but reaching assets on other chains still requires a cross-chain hop.

Fees, tags & time

Swapping XRP has a few cost layers: the XRP Ledger transaction fee (a very small amount of XRP), any exchange or swap-service fee and spread, and the destination network's fee for the asset you receive.

Many exchange deposits require a destination tag to credit XRP to the right account — omitting it can delay or misdirect the credit. XRPL settlement itself is fast, usually a few seconds, but the swap service's processing and the destination network can add time. Review the quoted output before confirming.

Is swapping XRP safe?

Swapping across chains adds moving parts on top of normal asset risk. Read the notices below before you send.

Address, network & tag risk
Sending XRP to the wrong address or omitting a required destination tag can lose or delay funds. Counterparty and swap-service risk apply, and transfers can stall under load. Use services you can verify and beware phishing front ends.
Verify before you send
Verify the deposit address, the destination network and asset, and any required destination tag before sending. Send a small test amount first when using a route for the first time, and keep the XRPL transaction hash.

Swap problems & fixes

Most XRP swap issues trace to a missing tag, a wrong network, or a pending cross-chain leg.

  • Missing destination tag: if the receiver requires a tag and you omit it, contact the service — the credit can be delayed.
  • Wrong network on the output: confirm which chain the asset you receive lives on before swapping.
  • Unfunded XRPL account: the XRP Ledger requires a base reserve; a brand-new account needs a minimum XRP balance to activate.
  • Pending delivery: a settled XRP payment and a pending output delivery are separate stages — track both hashes.
  • Stuck swap: keep the XRPL transaction hash and check the service's status tool before retrying.

Swap XRP FAQ

What does it mean to swap XRP?

Swapping XRP means exchanging it for another asset, such as a stablecoin like USDT or a token on another chain. XRP is native to the XRP Ledger, so a swap runs on a centralized exchange or a cross-chain swap service, not an Ethereum-style same-chain DEX.

Is XRP an EVM or ERC-20 token?

No. XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger, a separate blockchain that is not EVM-compatible. It is not an ERC-20 token, so moving between XRP and an EVM chain needs a cross-chain route.

How do I swap XRP for USDT or another token?

Use a centralized exchange to trade XRP for the target asset and withdraw it, or a non-custodial cross-chain swap service that accepts XRP and sends the output to an address you control. Confirm the destination network and address first.

What does swapping XRP cost?

The XRP Ledger transaction fee (a small amount of XRP), any exchange or swap-service fee and spread, and the destination network's fee for the asset you receive. Compare the quoted output before confirming.

Is swapping XRP safe?

Risks include a wrong address or network, an omitted destination tag, service and counterparty risk, and phishing. Verify the address, network and any tag, and send a small test amount first. Not financial advice.

Do XRP payments need a destination tag?

Many exchanges use a destination tag to credit XRP deposits to the right account. Sending XRP to such an address without the required tag can delay or misdirect the credit, so always include it when asked.

Notes before you swap XRP

Mind the destination tag. Many XRP deposits need a destination tag to be credited correctly, so include it whenever the receiver asks. Before you send:
  • Confirm the deposit address, the destination network and the asset you will receive.
  • Include any required destination tag and keep the XRPL transaction hash.
  • Test a new route with a small amount before sending more.
